EPA Method 1663:
Differentiation of Diesel and Crude Oil by GC/FID

An oil sample is diluted in methylene chloride. An internal standard is added and an aliquot is injected into a gas chromatograph (GC). The components of the oil are separated by the GC and detected by a flame-ionization detector (FID).

This method differentiates between diesel oil and crude oil in drilling muds and other sources by comparing the ratio of n-alkanes in the C9-C30 range as determined by gas chromatography (GC) with a flame-ionization detector (FID).
