EPA Method 206.3:
Arsenic by Gaseous Hydride Generation and AA. Official Name: Arsenic (Atomic Absorption - Gaseous Hydride)

Summary:
Arsenic in a sample is first reduced to the trivalent form using stannous chloride, and converted to arsine (arsenic tri-hydride) using zinc metal. The gaseous hydride is swept into an argon-hydrogen flame of an atomic absorption spectrophometer and measured.

Scope:
This method determines inorganic arsenic in drinking water and most fresh and saline waters in the absence of high concentrations of chromium, cobalt, copper, mercury, molybdenum, nickel, and silver.

Citation:
Methods for the Chemical Analysis of Water and Wastes (MCAWW) (EPA/600/4-79/020)

Interferences:
For interferences see EPA Methods 200.0 and 206.5.

QC Requirements:
Spike industrial waste samples with a known amount of arsenic to establish adequate recovery. QC requirements for drinking water procedures are provided in method 200.0.

Maximum Holding Time:
6 months (MCAWW, Table 1).

Media:
WATER

Subcategory:
Inorganic

Concentration:
2-20 ug/L (working range).

Sample Prep:
200.0, 206.5

Precision:
Precision and accuracy values were calculated using interlaboratory data from EPA-managed Water Pollution (WP) performance evaluation studies.

Detection:
The DL is to be considered the minimum working limit achievable with this method.

Revision Number:
Issued 1974
