EPA Method 340.3:Fluoride by Colorimetry. Official Name: Fluoride (Colorimetric, Automated Compexone)
Summary:Fluoride ion reacts with the red cerous chelate of alizarin complexone which is determined by automated colorimetry.
Scope:This automated method determines fluoride in drinking, surface and saline waters; domestic and industrial wastes.
Citation:Methods for the Chemical Analysis of Water and Wastes (MCAWW) (EPA/600/4-79/020)
Interferences:Aluminum interference (aluminum forms a complex with fluoride) can be eliminated by treating the sample with 8-hydroxyquinoline (to complex aluminum) and extraction with chloroform. At aluminum levels below 0.2 mg/L, the extraction procedure is not required.
QC Requirements:None.
Maximum Holding Time:28 days (MCAWW, Table 1).
Media:WATER
Subcategory:Inorganic
Concentration:0.05 - 1.5 mg/L
Precision:Precision and accuracy values were calculated using interlaboratory data from EPA-managed Water Pollution (WP) performance evaluation studies.
