EPA Method 340.3:
Fluoride by Colorimetry. Official Name: Fluoride (Colorimetric, Automated Compexone)

Summary:
Fluoride ion reacts with the red cerous chelate of alizarin complexone which is determined by automated colorimetry.

Scope:
This automated method determines fluoride in drinking, surface and saline waters; domestic and industrial wastes.

Citation:
Methods for the Chemical Analysis of Water and Wastes (MCAWW) (EPA/600/4-79/020)

Interferences:
Aluminum interference (aluminum forms a complex with fluoride) can be eliminated by treating the sample with 8-hydroxyquinoline (to complex aluminum) and extraction with chloroform. At aluminum levels below 0.2 mg/L, the extraction procedure is not required.

QC Requirements:
None.

Maximum Holding Time:
28 days (MCAWW, Table 1).

Media:
WATER

Subcategory:
Inorganic

Concentration:
0.05 - 1.5 mg/L

Precision:
Precision and accuracy values were calculated using interlaboratory data from EPA-managed Water Pollution (WP) performance evaluation studies.

Detection:
-

Revision Number:
Issued 1971
