EPA Method 376.2:Sulfide by Colorimetry. Official Name: Sulfide (Colorimetric, Methylene Blue)
Summary:Sulfide in a sample reacts with dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine (p-aminodimethyl aniline) in the presence of ferric chloride to produce methylene blue, a dye which is measured with a colorimeter.
Scope:This method determines total and dissolved sulfides in drinking, surface and saline waters; domestic and industrial wastes.
Citation:Methods for the Chemical Analysis of Water and Wastes (MCAWW) (EPA/600/4-79/020)
Interferences:(A) Aeration: Aeration can result in loss of sulfide due to volatilization or reaction with oxygen.(B) Color/Turbidity: Color or turbidity in the sample may interfere with the measurements.
QC Requirements:None.
Maximum Holding Time:Analyze immediately.
Media:WATER
Subcategory:Inorganic
Concentration:Sulfide concentrations below 20 mg/L.
Sample Prep:None.
Precision:Exact precision and accuracy are not available. The method states, that accuracy is about 10%, but does not describe the data on which this is based.
Detection:None.
Revision Number:Issued 1978
