EPA Method 376.2:
Sulfide by Colorimetry. Official Name: Sulfide (Colorimetric, Methylene Blue)

Summary:
Sulfide in a sample reacts with dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine (p-aminodimethyl aniline) in the presence of ferric chloride to produce methylene blue, a dye which is measured with a colorimeter.

Scope:
This method determines total and dissolved sulfides in drinking, surface and saline waters; domestic and industrial wastes.

Citation:
Methods for the Chemical Analysis of Water and Wastes (MCAWW) (EPA/600/4-79/020)

Interferences:
(A) Aeration: Aeration can result in loss of sulfide due to volatilization or reaction with oxygen.(B) Color/Turbidity: Color or turbidity in the sample may interfere with the measurements.

QC Requirements:
None.

Maximum Holding Time:
Analyze immediately.

Media:
WATER

Subcategory:
Inorganic

Concentration:
Sulfide concentrations below 20 mg/L.

Sample Prep:
None.

Precision:
Exact precision and accuracy are not available. The method states, that accuracy is about 10%, but does not describe the data on which this is based.

Detection:
None.
