EPA Method 5021:
VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS IN SOILS AND OTHER SOLID MATRICES USING EQUILIBRIUM HEADSPACE ANALYSIS

Summary:
At least 2 g of a soil sample are placed into a crimp-seal or screw-top glass headspace vial at time of sampling.

Scope:
Method 5021 is a general purpose method for the preparation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in soils/sediments and solid wastes for determination by gas chromatography (GC) or gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The method is applicable to a wide range of organic compounds that have sufficiently high volatility to be effectively removed from soil samples using an equilibrium headspace procedure. The following compounds have been determined in soils using Method 5021.
