EPA Method 8021B:
Aromatic and Halogenated Volatiles by Gas Chromatography Using Photoionization and/or Electrolytic Conductivity Detectors

Samples are analyzed using either direct injection, purge-and-trap, or vacuum distillation. The compounds are separated by the GC and detected using either a photoionization detector and an electrolytic conductivity detector in series or by using separate detection.

This method determines the concentration of various volatile organic compounds in ground water, aqueous sludges, caustic liquors, waste solvents, oily wastes, mousses, tars, fibrous wastes, polymeric emulsions, filter cakes, spent carbons, spent catalysts, soils, and sediments.

(A) Contamination: Sample contamination may occur by diffusion of volatile organics (particularly chlorofluorocarbons and methylene chloride) through the septum seal during shipment and storage. The analysis of trip blanks will identify this problem.(B) Matrix interferences: Sulfur dioxide may interfere in the analysis of vinyl chloride.(C) Refer to the appropriate 5000 Series method and Method 8000.

QC Requirements:
Refer to Chapter One and Methods 8000, 3500, and 5000 for specific QC procedures. Procedures include: validation of sample preparation, introduction, and analysis, initial demonstration of capability, calibration verification, evaluation of retention times, analysis of method blanks, matrix spikes, duplicates, surrogates and laboratory control samples.

Precision and accuracy values were calculated based on the average of 7 replicates, spiked at 10 ug/L, using internal calibration, the purge-and-trap method, and hall electrolytic conductivity detection.
