EPA Method 9074:TURBIDIMETRIC SCREENING METHOD FOR TOTAL RECOVERABLE PETROLEUM HYDROCARBONS IN SOIL
Summary:A sample of soil is extracted with a solvent mixture composed primarily of methanol. The resulting mixture is allowed to settle and the free liquid is decanted into the barrel of a filter-syringe assembly. The liquid is filtered through a filter into a vial containing an aqueous emulsifier development solution. The filtered sample is allowed to develop for 10 min. During the development, any hydrocarbons present precipitate out and become suspended in solution.
Scope:This method may be used to screen soil samples to determine the total amount of recoverable petroleum hydrocarbon contamination in soil including a wide range of fuels, oils, and greases. The turbidimetric approach in this method is designed to quickly screen soil samples using a system calibrated with a blank and a single calibration standard.
