Determination of Formaldehyde in Ambient Air Using Adsorbent Cartridge Followed by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) [Active Sampling Methodology]

A known volume of ambient air is drawn through a prepacked cartridge coated with acidified DNPH at a sampling rate of 100-2000 mL/min for an appropriate period of time. Sampling rate and time are dependent upon carbonyl concentration in the test atmosphere.

This document describes a method for the determination of formaldehyde and other carbonyl compounds (aldehydes and ketones) in ambient air utilizing a coated-solid adsorbent followed by high performance liquid chromatographic detection. Formaldehyde has been found to be a major promoter in the formation of photochemical ozone. In particular, short term exposure to formaldehyde and other specific aldehydes (acetaldehyde, acrolein, crotonaldehyde) is known to cause irritation of the eyes, skin, and mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract.
