METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF PHOSGENE IN AMBIENT AIR USING HIGH PERFORMANCE LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHY

Summary:
Ambient air is drawn through a midget impinger containing 10 mL of 2/98 aniline/toluene (by volume). Phosgene readily reacts with aniline to form carbanilide (1,3-diphenylurea), which is stable indefinitely.

Scope:
This document describes a method for determination of phosgene in ambient air, in which phosgene is collected by passage of the air through a solution of aniline, forming carbanilide. The carbanilide is determined by HPLC. The method can be used to detect phosgene at the 0.1 ppbv level.
