EPA Method TO-8:
METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF PHENOL AND METHYLPHENOLS (CRESOLS) IN AMBIENT AIR USING HIGH PERFORMANCE LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHY

Summary:
Ambient air is drawn through two midget impingers, each containing 15 mL of 0.1 N NaOH. The phenols are trapped as phenolates.

Scope:
This document describes a method for determination of phenol and methylphenols (cresols) in ambient air. With careful attention to reagent purity and other factors, the method can detect these compounds at the 1-5 ppbv level.
